The Red Wing Wildlife League was formed in 1935 when a group of well-minded sportsmen from the Red Wing area banded together and began purchasing river bottomland in an effort to provide a means for outdoor recreation and to ensure this critical piece of habitat would not fall victim to development, deterioration, or divided among parties with varying interests. The first land purchase included the acquisition of approximately 1,600 acres of floodplain forest and wetlands. Within the next several decades the property expanded an additional 1,000 acres and now totals approximately 2800 acres. The property rests along the Mississippi River, a significant continental wildlife migration corridor, and contains the confluences of the Vermillion and Cannon Rivers, both of which meander along the property before finally draining into the great Mississippi River. As pristine undeveloped areas dwindle with urban sprawl, we realize the important role this parcel of property plays on the healthiness of the river and the wellbeing of the individuals inspired to enjoy it.
The Red Wing Wildlife League is a local non-profit organization that supports an assortment of community activities. Additionally the organization believes in multiple uses of the property by the community. All members are encouraged to hunt, hike, ski, bird watch, fish, camp, or participate in any other outdoor activity that allows you to enjoy the valuable resource.
Membership is open to residents of the city of Red Wing and seven adjacent townships - Featherstone, Hay Creek, Wacouta, Welch, and Vasa located in Minnesota; plus Isabelle and
Trenton located in Wisconsin.
